An Express Entry profile remains in the pool for up to 12 months after submission. If you do not receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) during that period, the profile automatically expires and is removed from the system. An ITA is separate: once issued, it gives you 60 days to submit your permanent residence application. Related reading: Tint express.
Express Entry profile validity in one minute
Your Express Entry profile is an entry into the pool, not a permanent residence application. It does not give you permanent resident status, a PR card, or a Confirmation of Permanent Residence.
If you are not invited within 12 months of submitting the profile, IRCC says the profile automatically expires and is removed from the system. Entering the pool does not guarantee an ITA. IRCC’s Express Entry application instructions explain these separate stages.
The practical answer to “How long is an Express Entry profile valid?” is up to one year from submission. The profile is not active indefinitely simply because your language results, ECA, or other documents remain valid.
The Express Entry deadline timeline

Express Entry has several separate clocks. The deadline that applies depends on whether you are preparing a profile, are already in the pool, have received an ITA, or are submitting your permanent residence application.
| Stage | Time limit or rule | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Profile preparation | 60 days after starting | Complete and submit the profile within this period or start again. |
| Profile in the pool | Up to 12 months after submission | The profile remains available for consideration, but an ITA is not guaranteed. |
| No ITA by expiry | Automatic expiry | The profile expires and is removed from the system. |
| ITA received | 60 days from the ITA | Submit the complete electronic permanent residence application within the deadline. |
The first 60-day period applies before entering the pool. The 12-month period starts after submitting the profile. The later 60-day period applies only after receiving an ITA. The profile creation instructions explain the first stage and confirm that entering the pool does not guarantee an invitation.
Can an Express Entry profile be renewed before it expires?
There is no simple renewal button that extends the original profile for another year. You can update a live profile when your circumstances change, but an expired profile is no longer active in the pool and generally must be replaced by a new profile.
| Action | When it applies | What to understand |
|---|---|---|
| Update a live profile | Your profile is active and your facts have changed | Update the account information. The change can affect eligibility or CRS information. |
| Withdraw a profile | You decide not to keep that submission active | Withdrawal ends that profile’s participation. It does not extend validity. |
| Allow it to expire | The 12-month period ends without an ITA | The profile is removed. Expiry does not create permanent residence or preserve a place in the pool. |
| Create a new profile | The old profile has expired or a new submission is otherwise needed | The new profile must reflect current facts and documents. |
“Renew,” “refresh,” and “resubmit” are often used interchangeably, but they describe different actions. Updating a live profile is not the same as creating a new profile after expiry.
Do not assume that maintaining two profiles is harmless or beneficial. Review the instructions in your IRCC account before creating another profile while an earlier one remains active, especially if your information has changed.
What to review before creating a new profile
A new profile should reflect your current situation, not copy an old submission automatically. Review every fact that affects program eligibility, CRS information, or the documents required after an ITA.
Language-test results
Check the test type, date, individual scores, and expiry date. IRCC states that language-test results must be less than two years old when you complete the Express Entry profile and when you submit the permanent residence application. The official language-test requirements also advise candidates to consider whether results will remain valid while they are in the pool.
A result can be valid when you create a profile but expire before an ITA arrives. Identify that risk before relying on the old score.
Education and the ECA
Review your credential details, Educational Credential Assessment report, and issue date. An ECA must be less than five years old when you complete the profile and submit the permanent residence application. The official ECA requirements explain this validity rule.
Record what was completed, what was assessed, and which supporting evidence is available. A new credential does not automatically change your eligibility.
Passport and identity details
Check your passport number, name spelling, date of birth, citizenship, expiry date, and any changes to your travel document. Keep former and current documents available if your identity or passport details changed.
Work history and occupation
Review dates, employers, job titles, hours, duties, locations, and supporting records for every period you claim. Your actual duties should support the occupation classification selected.
A change in employment, hours, occupation, or Canadian work experience can affect eligibility and CRS information. Do not carry forward a job offer or work period unless it remains current and documentable.
Family circumstances
Update marital or common-law status, spouse or partner details, children, accompanying family members, and dependant information. Marriage, separation, birth, adoption, or a change in accompanying status can affect the profile and later application.
Also review address, travel history, work authorization, and settlement-fund information where relevant.
Other CRS inputs
Recheck age, language scores, education, Canadian and foreign work experience, spouse or partner factors, provincial nomination information, and job-offer details. A new profile can produce a different result because your facts, documents, or selection arrangements may have changed.
A score such as 470 cannot be judged as sufficient in isolation. Its significance depends on the draw, category or program, date, and accuracy of the supporting information. No profile score guarantees an ITA.
What happens to your CRS score and pool position?
Updating a live profile can change the score associated with that profile. Creating a profile after expiry should be treated as a fresh assessment of your current information.
Do not assume that a previous CRS score, pool position, submission date, or tie-breaking information transfers automatically. The official technical material confirms that changes to a live profile may change the score, but it does not promise that a new profile preserves the former score or position.
Before resubmitting, compare the old profile with your current documents and recalculate the information that affects the result.
A decision guide for the stage you are in
You are several months from expiry
Record the submission date and work backward from the end of the 12-month period. Review language-test and ECA dates, monitor employment and family changes, and organize records that would be difficult to obtain quickly.
If something changes, update the live profile through the account process instead of waiting until the final days.
You are within the final weeks
Check whether an ITA or account message has arrived. Confirm that your passport, work history, education, family composition, language results, and job-offer information remain accurate.
If no ITA arrives before expiry, prepare the information needed for a possible new profile. Do not submit inaccurate or outdated answers simply to recreate the former profile.
Your profile has expired
An expired profile is no longer an active entry in the pool. Review your current facts and documents, then determine whether you still meet an Express Entry program’s requirements before creating a new profile.
Expiry does not lead automatically to permanent residence. A new profile may be considered for future invitations, but an ITA is not guaranteed.
You have received an ITA
Once an ITA is issued, the relevant deadline is the separate 60-day period for submitting the complete permanent residence application, not the remaining time on the original profile.
Compare every profile answer with your evidence before submitting. Declining an ITA or failing to submit within 60 days has different consequences from ordinary profile expiry.
Can you get permanent residence after one year?
Not from profile expiry alone. One year in the Express Entry pool does not grant permanent residence, and a profile is not a permanent residence application.
Permanent residence requires the applicable pathway, an ITA where required, a complete application, and a decision. If the profile expires without an ITA, a new submission is needed to continue through the pool.
Two hypothetical examples
Example 1: No ITA near the 12-month mark
Hypothetical situation: A worker submits a profile on March 10 and has not received an ITA by the following February. The worker should record the submission date, check account messages, review language and education documents, and compare the old work and family information with current facts.
If the profile expires, the worker can assess whether a new profile is appropriate. The new profile should not be described as a renewal, and the former CRS information and pool position should not be assumed to carry over.
Example 2: Circumstances change before expiry
Hypothetical situation: A candidate’s language result is approaching its two-year limit, and the candidate has changed employers and married since submitting the profile. Those changes should be addressed while the profile is live, with the necessary answers and documents reviewed.
If a new profile is later created, it should reflect the current marriage, work history, language-result status, and accompanying-family information.
Edge cases that change the next step
An ITA arrives close to profile expiry
An ITA issued near the end of the profile period creates its own 60-day application period. It does not limit you to the few days remaining on the original profile.
You decline an ITA
Declining an ITA is not the same as submitting a permanent residence application. Review the account instructions carefully because the effect on your profile depends on the applicable process and remaining profile period.
You miss the 60-day ITA deadline
If you do not submit the complete application within the applicable 60-day period, the ITA expires. This is different from waiting for a profile to expire after 12 months.
Your work permit expires while you wait
Profile validity and work-permit validity are separate matters. Review the separate rules and deadlines that apply to your work permit and temporary status.
What are the 2026 rules for permanent residence?
No general “PR after one year” rule replaces the profile-validity rule. The current official material distinguishes a profile that remains in the pool for up to 12 months from an ITA and the later permanent residence application.
Verify the requirements for your specific Express Entry stream and read account-specific messages before submitting. Do not rely on a score, document rule, or program detail copied from an older profile.
Final pre-submission checklist
- Record the exact submission date and end of the 12-month validity period.
- Check your account for an ITA, messages, document requests, or status changes.
- Confirm passport, identity, address, marital status, dependants, and accompanying-family information.
- Review language-test dates and scores.
- Review your ECA date, assessed credential, education history, and supporting records.
- Audit work-experience dates, duties, hours, employer details, and evidence.
- Recheck job-offer, provincial nomination, settlement-fund, and other CRS information.
- Recalculate current information instead of assuming the former CRS score remains unchanged.
- Save submitted answers and supporting records.
- Read current instructions in your IRCC account before updating, withdrawing, recreating, or submitting anything.
Express Entry profile expiry questions
Can I renew my Express Entry profile before it expires?
No simple renewal extends the original profile for another 12 months. You can update a live profile, but an expired profile generally requires a new submission to re-enter the pool.
Can I have two Express Entry profiles at the same time?
Do not assume that two profiles are permitted or beneficial. Review current account instructions before creating another profile while an earlier one remains active.
Does a new profile keep my old CRS score or tie-breaking date?
Do not assume that it does. A new profile is a new submission based on current facts, and the former score, pool position, or tie-breaking information should not be treated as automatically transferable.
What should I do if my work permit expires while waiting for an ITA?
Review the separate rules and deadlines that apply to your work permit and temporary status.
How much time does Maxx Life take to prepare and submit a profile?
